Carat measures a diamond's weight — not its size. Because larger diamonds are rarer, price climbs steeply as carat weight rises.
Weight, Not Size
Two diamonds of equal carat can look different sizes depending on shape and cut.

- Face-up size — elongated shapes like oval and marquise often appear larger than their carat suggests.
- Cut quality — a well-cut diamond looks bigger and brighter than a deep, poorly cut one.
- Magic sizes — just under popular weights (e.g. 0.90ct vs 1.00ct) can offer great value.
- Balance — consider carat alongside cut, color and clarity for the best overall stone.
