18 in is what most people choose, and what we would suggest if you are buying this as a gift and cannot ask.
How to measure
Wrap a tape measure or a strip of string around your neck and let it fall to where you would want the pendant to sit. Measure that length against a ruler.
If you are wearing this over clothing rather than against the skin, add an inch.
One thing to keep in mind
Larger stones hang better on a longer chain — a heavy pendant on a short chain sits high and can look crowded at the throat. From 5 ct we would suggest 18 in or more.
